Inscribing Your Runes

First decide which type of indelible inks or paints to use - just ensure that your markers are ‘permanent’ and ‘waterproof’. There is a good choice of acrylic rock paint pens – gold, bronze, silver and a wide range of colours, plus white for highlighting. Brush application paints are also available. For outlining the rune symbols, I use a slim-tipped black paint pen or black laundry-marker. I recommend that you draw the outlines in pencil first, with a rubber to hand so you can make adjustments if necessary.
Before you inscribe the pebble, make sure you are comfortable with the intended symbol shape, so practice on paper first. You will find examples of hand drawn Rune symbols on the Interpretations page. However, as this is your unique version of the symbols, some of your Runes may differ radically from these website illustrations.
For instance (10) Confidence – Flower: can be any flower you like – a trumpet daffodil, a multi-petalled rose or a simple 5 petal bloom; (14) Resource – Golden Goblet - can be a long-stemmed glass or more of a vase-shaped vessel. Likewise, for each Rune, choose your own version of the symbol, one which resonates with you and is easy to reproduce.
In case you need to ‘rescue’ a mistake, it is useful to know that the Posca Paints will generally cover over other lines [including black], although you may want to treat such areas more than once.
If you like, you can mark the corresponding Rune number on the underside of the pebble. I do this, as some people are interested in numeric values for 'lucky' reasons, which may offer positive placebo effects.
When you are happy with your Rune symbols leave them to dry thoroughly. You now apply a thin layer of transparent quick-dry glue over the icons and the numbers. Finally brush or spray a top coat of varnish on both sides.
NB: if your symbols fade over time, you can always reapply the markings. The fact that your Runes are clinking around in a receptacle of some kind – bag, pouch, box etc – does mean the symbols will be subject to inevitable wear.
