Rationale for Emotional Intelligence [EI]

EI is now acknowledged, by both academics and therapeutic professionals, as a potent cognitive feature which is key to both your personal and professional success. A definition of Emotional Intelligence tells us it encompasses “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions skilfully, to handle interpersonal relationships with empathy and to avoid or solve potential problems by making good judgments.”

We all possess Emotional Intelligence to a greater or lesser degree. It is at the heart of your thoughts, words, actions and experiences. It is what makes you a genial person - someone to whom others turn in times of need, someone who understands and empathises, even when there are no easy answers, a person who cares about the environmental legacy for children and grandchildren.

Emotional Intelligence can be vastly increased by cultivating equanimity in most situations, at the same time striving to make the very best use of your skills. In particular, when you apply your talents to creative projects, family support and community ventures, devoid of self-interest, such activities manifest altruistically as emotional ease - contentment with what is - a key factor for a happy flourishing life.

People who show high level EI play down unrealistic expectations while continuing to nurture purposeful aspirations. They enjoy accomplishment and adventure but let go of cravings and attachment to material possessions, over and above those deemed appropriate for comfort. They recognise the short-lived nature of acquisitions and constant thrill seeking, while appreciating the benefits of new experiences coupled with playfulness.
