(24) Protection - The Shield
Safeguard your emotional well-being with an imaginary protective shield. Purposely take precautions to ensure your thoughts, feelings and actions are free from undue malign influences or self-sabotage from your own doubts and fears.
Your personal defences may be many and varied - ensure you deploy them in an emotionally intelligent way.
This Rune offers you a psychological shield as your protection against "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" which fictionally overwhelmed Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Your personal outrageous fortune can be many things, from mundane everyday niggles to minor upsets to life-threatening struggles.
The Rune of Protection indicates it is healthy to scrutinise aspects of your life which may be in need of safeguarding. Your mental-physical health, your time, your finances and your relationships all require protection. Can you think of anything currently out of kilter which needs security maintenance of some sort?
What measures do you have in place to protect your mental and emotional welfare against mindless chatter, sabotaging doubts, low self-esteem, victimhood, smart device addiction, unrealistic expectations, attachments etc?
How about your health: do you protect your body from polluted environments, junk foods, excessive alcohol, smoke inhalation, drugs, slothfulness, sleep deprivation, and take steps to avoid physical harm?
Next up is your time - it is very precious - it is literally your 'life-time'. Are you working smart rather than slogging away for hours? Are you wasting time on unimportant trivialities? Are you sensitive to the need for recuperative time, solitude, fun and laughter – all of which promote well-being?
Your finances and your personal data also require security. If you are out of financial balance, there is constant low-level discomfort – having enough money for your needs [rather than your wants], is the backdrop for contented existence.
Then consider the protective status of your personal relationships? Are there controlling individuals in your life or people who drain your energy? Do you have a robust means of recovery?
Finally, are you doing your bit to protect the environment? This is your legacy to the next generation and to our wondrous planet earth.
